Ingredients:
Each Macu-SAVETM capsule contains 10mg Meso-Zeaxanthin, 10mg Lutein and 2mg Zeaxanthin –derived using extracts of the marigold flower (Tagetes Erecta).

Crucially these three ingredients are also the same three macular carotenoids found in high concentrations at the back of the eye within the yellow coloured filter or macular pigment which is believed to protect the macula against damaging visible blue light or oxidative stress.

What is Lutein?
Lutein (LOO-teen) is a naturally occurring carotenoid vitamin. It is a deep yellow compound, made by plants in order to help absorb light from the sun and turn it into energy, as part of the photosynthesis process. Animals can only obtain this vital nutrient by eating plants.

Lutein is also found in high concentrations at the back of the eye in the macular pigment and is believed to help protect the macula against oxidative stress and visible blue light.

What is Zeaxanthin?
Almost identical to Lutein, Zeaxanthin (zee-ah-ZAN-thin) is also a yellow compound or carotenoid, produced by plants to absorb light and can only be consumed by animals eating plants. It is the chemical responsible for the vivid yellow colour of saffron and yellow peppers.

Zeaxanthin gathers in high concentrations within the retina and is a significant part of the macular pigment, which is thought to protect the delicate light sensitive cells in macula against oxidative stress and visible blue light.

What is Meso-Zeaxanthin?
Similarly to Lutein and Zeaxanthin, Meso-Zeaxanthin (MEE-so zee-ah-ZAN-thin) is a yellowish carotenoid, which has powerful antioxidant qualities and an ability to filter harmful visible blue light, however unlike Lutein and Zeaxanthin it is not found in plants and is therefore not part of our normal everyday diet.

Meso-Zeaxanthin is also the third carotenoid present in the retina and together with Lutein and Zeaxanthin they form the macular pigment. Of the 700 carotenoids present in nature only these three specific carotenoids gather in the macula. Furthermore Meso-Zeaxanthin is not present anywhere else in the body and can only found in this highly targeted point, right at the very centre of the macula where vision is at its sharpest.
